Message from the Captain

Ahoy mates!

This past weekend was an outstanding kickoff for GRITS, the 50th Punchbowl Regatta at Lake Martin hosted by Dixie Sailing Club.  The food was great and we had new faces with us to introduce to our old friends down in Auburn country.  This year we had 4 boats traveling the over 4 hour drive down 65 and over to Alexander City.  I passed out Fleet Burgee car magnets to everyone who wanted one, stickers too!  The drive was uneventful, except for that one turn onto 280...anyway...the regatta...

US Navy Sea Cadets

From the PPYC March Mainsheet newsletter...

"Kudos to Tony Arena and the Catalina Fleet skippers who responded to the call for volunteers to host a day on the water for the United States Navy Sea Cadet program.  Over 30 young cadets and their adult leaders enjoyed he day on the water with most experiencing their first time on a sailing vessel."

A big thank you to Tony Arena, Fleet Vice Captain, for organizing this event.  Fleet members David Pilcher, Bob Keim, Ken Gumm, Sam Beckman, and Craig Klich also volunteered their time and boats for the day.  Thank you guys!

Upcoming Events

The next sailing events on the Fleet calendar are the Tennessean Regatta, April 14 and 15, hosted by Harbor Island Yacht Club; and the Force 5 Regatta, April 21 and 22, hosted by Percy Priest Yacht Club.  Fleet members will be participating in each, and are both great events. Check out the websites for more details and registration.

The next GRITS regatta will be the Chattanooga Challenge, May 5 and 6, hosted by Privateer Yacht Club in Chattanooga, TN.  Privateer is home to Fleet 95.  With over 30 active Catalina 22 sailors, Fleet 95 is the largest fleet in the NSA.  The Challenge has been a long time stop for Fleet 52 members and friends.  Only 2.5 hours from the Nashville area, this is the easiest of the GRITS regattas to attend.  The sailing is always competitive, the food always good, and the people are some of the best you'll ever meet.  But we say that about every stop on the GRITS series... come see for yourself.
